How does smoking affect my Oral Health?

Smoking can have major effects on the health of your gums, teeth, mouth and throat. Some problems are more obvious, such as staining, yellowing of teeth and bad breath. There are annoying and unpleasant but are not a threat to our general health, however smoking contributes to far more serious and unseen conditions such as

  • Gum disease (Periodontal disease) which causes tooth loss
  • Increased risk of tooth decay
  • Mouth and throat cancer

Many diseases of the mouth and throat are linked to smoking cigarettes, pipes and cigars. There is no safe level of use.

What is Gum disease?

The most common gum diseases are gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and periodontitis (affecting tooth and surrounding soft and hard tissues). They are caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria which builds up on teeth.

The rates of Gum disease are much higher an frequent in smokers vs non smokers. Smokers are more likely to loose one or more teeth due to gum disease have a higher chance of needing dentures compared to non smokers.

Signs and symptoms of Gum disease:

  • Bleeding gums while brushing your teeth
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Mobile tooth/teeth

Oral Cancer

The risk of oral cancer is much greater among tobacco users, especially in those who drink alcohol. Many early signs of oral cancer are painless and difficult to detect with a thorough dental examination. The cure rate is highest when oral cancer is diagnosed and treated early. The longer Oral cancer is left unnoticed and untreated, the greater the risk of spreading to other parts of the body.

Signs and symptoms of Oral Cancer:

  • Sores in the mouth that bleed easily and fail to heal
  • White or red patches in the mouth that will not go away
  • Lumps or soreness in the mouth, throat or tongue
  • Difficulty in chewing and swallowing food
  • Changes in the way that the upper and lower teeth fit together

How to Quit Smoking

  • Contact the Quitline on 13 78 48. A Quit pack containing self help materials will be sent to you upon request
  • Speak to your General Practitioner and consider the use of Nicotine Replacement Therapy
  • Avoid situations that put you in contact with other smokers
  • Reward yourself for reaching small goals
  • Never give up, try again!
